Jihad during Ramadan

April 6, 2025

Every year, the Islamic community worldwide observes Ramadan, a month of fasting, prayer, and reflection.

But what does the Islamic political doctrine state about the treatment of Kafirs (non-Muslims) during Ramadan in its foundational texts, the Koran, Hadith, and Sira?

In Mohammed's biography, the Sira, the battle of Badr is described as an attack on a caravan of Meccan pagans carrying goods from Syria towards their city of Mecca. It was the first major jihadi attack against Kafirs that Mohammed led in his military career. The attack was during Ramadan.

Years later, in 630 AD, Mohammed and his army conquered Mecca, which was still a pagan city, on the 18th day of Ramadan.

According to the Koran, Allah prefers those who die for his cause (1) and grants paradise to them (2). Mohammed stated that jihad is the best deed for a Muslim (3), and that dying during Ramadan grants direct access to paradise, without waiting for judgement day. (4)

The Koran says in 89 verses that Mohammed is the perfect man and that his life’s example is the pattern for all humanity to follow for eternity. (5)

So Islamic political doctrine associates Ramadan with violent jihad against the Kafir.
